Historical Context: The Katanakake

In feudal Japan, a sword stand, known as a Katanakake, was not merely a piece of furniture but a symbol of status and the deep reverence held for the weapon, which was considered the "soul of the samurai." Proper storage followed strict rules of etiquette. A Katana was always placed on the rack with the edge (ha) facing upwards. This protected the blade's edge from dulling inside the scabbard and allowed for a smooth draw. Placing the sword with the hilt (tsuka) to the left indicated peace and trust toward guests, as it was more difficult to draw the sword quickly with the right hand from that position.

Maintenance and Safety

To ensure your stand serves you for many years and stays looking like new, minimal care is required. Simply remove dust with a dry or very slightly damp microfibre cloth. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive sponges that could scratch the lacquered surface.

Always exercise caution when placing or removing swords from the rack. If you are displaying sharp Japanese swords, remember that handling them is entirely at your own risk and can cause fatal injuries if mishandled. Keep the stand out of reach of children and ensure it is placed in a location where it cannot be easily knocked over. Never use the stand for purposes other than displaying decorative or practice weapons.

Recommended Accessories

For the complete maintenance of your samurai weapons, we recommend a traditional sword cleaning kit including Choji oil and an Uchiko powder ball. This stand pairs perfectly with our collection of Katana, Wakizashi, or Tanto blades to create an authentic and impressive display.
