Spanish Bell-Hilt Rapier "Tizona" – Luxury Replica by Marto

Historical Context and Usage

The name of the sword refers to Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, known as El Cid Campeador (1043–1099), the Spanish national hero. The original Tizona sword is now displayed in the museum in Burgos. However, this replica does not represent a sword from the 11th century but reflects a later evolution where the original blade (or the idea of it) was mounted into more modern hilts typical of the 16th and 17th centuries. This type of weapon, called a rapier, was primarily a civilian and dueling weapon. Its dominant feature is the bell-shaped guard (also known as a cup hilt or cazoleta), which perfectly protected the fencer's hand from the point of the opponent's weapon. In Spain, a specific school of fencing called La Verdadera Destreza developed with this type of weapon, emphasizing geometry, movement, and the cold logic of combat. Today, this rapier is intended exclusively as a prestigious interior decoration. It is ideal for hanging on the wall above the fireplace, in a study, or as part of a nobleman's costume for historical parades where contact combat is not expected.

Detailed Description and Craftsmanship

At first glance, you will be captivated by the elaborately detailed bell guard. It is decorated with fine openwork featuring floral and geometric motifs, giving the weapon lightness and elegance.

  • Grip: It is covered in green velvet and reinforced with metal ribs, ensuring a firm grip and an aesthetic contrast to the silver surface of the metal.
  • Quillons and Pommel: These are made of Zamak alloy with a finish imitating old silver. The pommel has a shape typical of Toledo weapons of this period.
  • Blade: It is made of high-quality AISI 440 stainless steel. It is tempered, giving it hardness and shine, and features a fuller to reduce weight.

Care and Maintenance

To keep this gem looking like new for years to come, please follow these guidelines:

  1. Cleaning: Since the blade is made of stainless steel, it is very resistant to corrosion. However, we recommend wiping it regularly with a dry, soft cloth to remove fingerprints and dust.
  2. Zamak Parts: Clean the bell guard and quillons only with a soft textile cloth. Do not use aggressive chemicals or abrasive cleaners (sand, steel wool), which could damage the surface finish.
  3. Velvet: Protect the green velvet on the handle from moisture and direct sunlight to prevent fading.

Safety Warning

This rapier is exclusively a decorative item. While the stainless steel blade is hard, it is brittle. It is not suitable for fencing, striking objects, or combat training. Upon impact, the blade could shatter, sending sharp fragments flying, which could cause serious injury to you or bystanders. Use the sword only for display or as a costume accessory where there is no risk of contact with another weapon.
