Are you looking for the perfect companion piece to your "Wind and Thunder" collection? This Wind and Thunder Tanto (SH5003) by Hanwei (Paul Chen) is exactly what you need. It is designed to create a perfect set with the Katana (SH5001) and Wakizashi (SH5024) from this impressive series. This tanto features traditional construction and high-quality materials. The tsuka (handle) is covered with genuine ray skin (samegawa) and wrapped with premium black Japanese cotton (tsuka-ito). A standout feature is the kashira (pommel) made of blackened iron, bearing the Tomoe symbol, which represents swirling energy. The saya (scabbard) has a deep black lacquer finish. The blade is hand-forged from high-carbon steel. It is a functional and sharp tool, ideal for collectors.

This tanto is made in the aikuchi style, which is a traditional Japanese dagger mounting without a guard (tsuba). This style was popular as it allowed for easy concealed carry and a quick draw. In samurai culture, the tanto was a constant companion, worn even in private settings where longer swords had to be set aside. It served as a tool for self-defence, but also as a status symbol. WARNING: Extremely Sharp Blade!

  • Always handle the knife with maximum respect. It can cause severe or fatal injury.
  • This knife is not intended for stage combat, contact sparring, or cutting at hard objects.
  • It is intended for collection purposes, kata (forms) practice, and potential test cutting (tameshigiri) on appropriate soft materials (e.g., tatami mats).
  • Keep the tanto securely stored and out of the reach of children and unauthorised persons.
  • Use is strictly at your own risk. Neither the seller nor the manufacturer is liable for damages or injuries caused by improper use.

Tanto Care

The high-carbon steel blade is susceptible to rust. To maintain the tanto's beauty and functionality, regular maintenance is essential.

  • After every use, and even after every touch with a bare hand, wipe the blade immediately with a clean, soft cloth to remove moisture and fingerprints.
  • Subsequently, apply a very thin layer of sword oil (e.g., Choji or Hanwei oil) to the blade.
  • The lacquered scabbard can be simply wiped with a soft, dry cloth.
  • Don'ts: Do not leave the knife in a damp environment. Never cut at hard materials. Do not clean the blade with abrasive agents.
