Forged Quigley Frontier Axe with Leather Belt Sheath
Practical Use and Construction
The Quigley axe is designed as a versatile tool in the style of a tomahawk or a light carpenter's hatchet. Thanks to its lightweight design (approx. 1.4 lbs / 650 g) and balance, it is ideal for preparing kindling, de-limbing, or fine woodworking in a historical camp. The axe head is securely fitted onto a hardwood handle, which features notches at the base for a secure grip, preventing the tool from slipping during extended work sessions.
The leather sheath is designed to protect both the edge and the user during transport. It can be easily attached to belts up to 2.5" (65 mm) wide. Please note that the leather color may vary slightly (from dark brown to black) depending on the batch, highlighting the unique character of each piece.

Historical Context
The shape of this axe is inspired by the light hatchets that were essential gear for trappers, frontiersmen, and rangers during the 18th and 19th centuries. Similar tools evolved from European naval boarding axes and became iconic symbols of the wilderness conquest in North America and colonial Europe. Interestingly, axes with this profile were often used as trade items with indigenous tribes, who valued their lightness and lethal efficiency in close combat and hunting.
Maintenance and Safety Instructions
To ensure your Quigley axe serves you for a long time, please follow these basic care steps:
- Steel Care: Since the head is made of carbon steel, clean and dry it after every use. Apply a thin layer of mineral oil (e.g., Ballistol) to prevent rust.
- Wood Care: The handle is a natural material. If the wood dries out, the head might loosen. We recommend treating the handle with linseed oil in such cases.
- Safety: The axe is supplied with an edge thickness of approx. 1 mm. It is intended for woodworking. Never strike metal or stone, as this could chip the blade.
- Warning: The wooden handle is a consumable part. An "overstrike" (hitting the wood instead of the blade) can cause it to break. The manufacturer does not provide a warranty for the handle.
