Pistol duels were not uncommon in the 19th century. According to modern estimates, about 25% of the nobles fought at least once in life from a duel. For a pistol duel, the parties would be placed back to back with loaded duel pistols in hand and walk a set number of paces, turn to face the opponent, and shoot. Typically, the graver the insult, the fewer the paces agreed upon.
