Narrow 13th Century Leather Belt Andres with Brass Buckle

Historical Context and Proper Knotting

During the 13th century, the peak of the High Middle Ages, narrow leather belts were the absolute standard for all social classes. Men used them to cinch their outer tunics and kirtles, while women wore them over their long dresses. The belt did not merely serve as an aesthetic element; it was a crucial load-bearing system for leather coin pouches, bags, knives, and daggers. A prominent fashion statement of this era was to let the long end of the belt hang loosely downwards, which visually slimmed the figure.

To achieve a perfect historical look, the belt must be fastened correctly using a medieval knot. The process is simple: you thread the long end of the strap through the brass buckle, secure it with the prong into the hole, and loop the remaining free part underneath the fastened belt from the bottom upwards. Then, let the end drape casually over the belt towards the ground. To make wearing it easier for you, if you provide your waist circumference in the order notes, we will custom punch five holes for you – two before and two after your specified measurement.

Leather Belt Care and Safety Instructions

High-quality natural leather requires proper care to retain its strength and flexibility over the long term. We recommend regularly treating the belt with a high-quality leather balm containing beeswax. If you get caught in a downpour at a historical event and the belt gets soaked, always let it dry slowly at normal room temperature. Under no circumstances should you dry the leather on a hot radiator, near an open flame, or in harsh summer sunlight. The leather would irreversibly shrink, harden, and crack. Please remember that slight variations in colour and surface texture compared to the photographs are a natural characteristic of genuine leather, making every manufactured belt a unique original.

Recommended Accessories

To accompany this authentic belt, we highly recommend acquiring a hand-sewn medieval leather pouch and a functional replica of a period knife with a scabbard. You can easily suspend these from the belt to bring your historical costume to absolute perfection.
