Narrow Gothic Leather Belt Gabriel in French High Gothic Style

Historical Context and Proper Belt Wearing

During the High Gothic period (roughly the 13th to 14th centuries), narrow belts were fundamental elements of clothing across all social classes. They were worn over outer garments such as the cotte or surcoat, often deliberately slung loosely on the hips. It was a period custom to thread the loose end of the belt behind the buckle and let it drape elegantly downwards, creating the typical medieval belt knot. The fittings on this belt, specifically the brass-looking buckle and the riveted chape featuring a lily or leaf motif, accurately reflect the artistic taste of southern France at the time. The leather strap is decorated along the edges with a subtle embossed line, and the connection at the buckle is honestly secured by hand-stitching with strong linen thread.

Leather Belt Care and Safety Guidelines

To ensure your belt serves you for a long time while retaining its suppleness and rich colour, we recommend regularly treating the leather with a high-quality beeswax-based leather balm. If the belt gets wet, never dry it near a direct heat source such as an open fire, a tiled stove, or a radiator. Rapid drying would cause the natural material to harden and crack. This belt is designed as a historical clothing accessory. For safety reasons, never use it for excessive load-bearing, tying heavy loads, and certainly not as a safety harness or climbing strap.

To complete your look, we recommend pairing this beautiful Gothic belt with a period leather belt pouch and a replica of a medieval rondel dagger.
