Narrow Medieval Leather Belt Mades with Brass Buckle, 13th Century

Historical Context and Medieval Knotting

In the 13th century, narrow belts were the absolute fashion standard for both men and women. These belts served not only the aesthetic purpose of cinching loose tunics and dresses but also had a purely practical function – leather coin pouches, horn combs, bags, or eating knives were suspended from them. A typical feature of the High Middle Ages was to leave the long end of the belt hanging casually downwards, which visually elongated the figure's silhouette.

The correct fastening of such a belt requires tying what is known as a medieval knot. Simply thread the end of the belt through the brass buckle, secure it with the prong into the hole, and loop the remaining long section underneath the fastened belt from the bottom upwards. Then, let the free end drape down over the belt towards the ground. This secures the connection and gives you a perfectly historical look. If you provide us with your exact waist circumference in the order notes, we will custom punch five holes into the leather for you – two before and two after your specified measurement, ensuring the belt fits perfectly even when you change layers of clothing.

Proper Leather Care and Safety Instructions

Leather is a natural material that, when treated well, rewards you with a beautiful patina and a long lifespan. To maintain its flexibility, we recommend occasionally greasing the belt with a high-quality leather balm containing beeswax. If you get soaked at a historical event, let the belt dry slowly at normal room temperature. Never dry it near an open fire, on a hot radiator, or in direct summer sunlight. The intense heat would cause the leather to harden and irreversibly crack. Also, bear in mind that the handcrafting of natural leather results in slight variations in colour and texture compared to the presentation photographs. Each belt is therefore a unique original.

Recommended Accessories for Your Costume

To complement this beautiful belt, we highly recommend acquiring a hand-sewn medieval leather pouch and a replica of a period knife with a scabbard. You can easily suspend these from the belt to complete your historical appearance to perfection.
