Simple Buckler Shield – 23 cm (12th–18th Century)
A Small Shield with a Big History
The buckler is a fist shield held by a central grip, not strapped to the forearm. This makes it extremely mobile. Its use is recorded in various combat treatises of the time, such as the Tower of London manuscript I.33. This model's simple construction fits a wide historical range from the 12th to the 18th century.
Construction and Design
This buckler is made of mild steel. The center features a domed boss that provides space for your hand holding the grip. The handle is made of wood riveted to the steel body, ensuring a firm and comfortable grip. The rim of the shield is reinforced (rolled) to a thickness of approximately 2.5 mm, which increases rigidity and protects your sword from damage caused by sharp metal edges.
