Milanese Mitten Gauntlets "Avant" (1400–1500)
Based on the Famous "Avant" Armour
These gauntlets are a faithful reproduction of the style found on the renowned Milanese armour known as "Avant" (circa 1440), housed in the Churburg Castle collection. The original armour is famous for the inscription repeated on its fauld, but also for its exceptional defensive geometry. Like the original, our gauntlets feature a wide, bell-shaped cuff that protects the wrist without hindering movement, and smooth, overlapping plates that maximize the "glancing surface" effect.
Design and Functionality
Mitten gauntlets were a staple of the 15th century (1400–1500). Artistic representations and museum pieces alike show that they were favored by knights and soldiers who used pole weapons. The mitten design groups the fingers together under solid steel plates, offering significantly better impact protection against crushing blows compared to fingered gauntlets. The thumb remains separate and articulated, allowing for a secure grip on your weapon.

Maintenance and Care
This product is made from untreated carbon steel and will rust if not cared for properly. To keep your armour in top condition:
- Oiling: Apply a coat of synthetic or mineral oil (such as WD-40) after every use or during storage.
- Storage: Keep in a dry environment. Moisture is the enemy of steel.
- Rust Removal: Surface rust is normal on untreated steel and can be easily removed with a scouring pad or fine steel wool.
Note: These gauntlets are designed as a steel shell. For comfort and impact absorption, it is highly recommended to wear a sturdy pair of leather gloves underneath. This item is intended for historical reenactment and stage combat; use caution and proper judgment regarding safety.
