Are you crafting a scabbard for your dagger, falchion, or sword and want it to look great while lasting a lifetime? Then you know that the tip of any scabbard is its most vulnerable point. Enter this elegant, simple steel scabbard chape by Marshal Historical. Not only does it give your piece a professional and historically accurate finish, but it also serves a critical protective function. It prevents the sharp point of the blade from piercing through the leather and injuring you, whilst also shielding the scabbard itself from abrasion when it drags on the ground. Simple Steel Scabbard Chape with Ball Finial

Functional Protection and Historical Style

The scabbard chape has been a standard component of edged weapons for centuries. With its minimalist conical shape and ball finial, this particular model fits perfectly into the aesthetic of the High Middle Ages through to the Renaissance. The ball at the tip isn't just decoration—in the crush of battle or tight spaces, it reduces the risk of the scabbard tip poking someone unpleasantly. Furthermore, it reinforces the structural integrity of the scabbard's end.

This item is made from mild steel. It is ideal for fitting onto a wood-core scabbard covered in leather or onto thick leather itself. As there are no pre-drilled holes visible in the photos, you have freedom in how you install it. You can glue the chape in place using a high-quality two-part metal adhesive, or you can carefully drill a hole to secure it with a rivet or decorative pin. This allows you to achieve maximum authenticity for your specific project.

How to Care for Your Scabbard Chape

Since this product is made from carbon steel without a stainless finish, it is susceptible to rust. This is a historically accurate feature but requires some maintenance:

  • Regularly treat it with maintenance oil (e.g., WD-40, mineral oil, or synthetic gun oil).
  • If surface rust appears, it can be easily removed with fine steel wool and re-oiled.
  • Never install the chape onto wet or damp leather without thoroughly treating the inside of the metal first (e.g., with lacquer or wax), otherwise, it may rust from the inside out.

Safety Warning: Although the chape has a rounded tip, it can deform if dropped on a hard surface. Do not use it as a striking tool. Exercise caution during installation (drilling, gluing) to avoid injury or damage to the finish.

To complete your project, you might find other materials from our range useful, such as leather, buckles, or rivets.
