Wide Renaissance Leather Belt with Cast Buckle and Strap End

Historical Context and Proper Wearing

Although some older sources might mistakenly categorize the styling of this belt as High Gothic, the massive buckle with its matching strap end and the dating to the late 16th century clearly place this piece in the Renaissance period. During this era, men wore wide, prominently fitted belts that served as the main load-bearing system for weapons (rapiers, falchions) and heavy coin pouches. Thanks to the exceptional width of 4.5 cm (1.77 in), the weight of your gear is distributed perfectly. The metal strap end (chape) serves not only an aesthetic function but, with its added weight, ensures that the free end of the belt hangs elegantly downwards after passing through the buckle and the leather keeper. When ordering, you select the overall length, and if you provide your exact waist circumference in the order notes, the holes will be punched custom to your measurements.

Care and Maintenance of Leather Gear

Smooth cowhide is an extremely durable natural material that will reward you with a long lifespan if you provide it with basic care. We recommend treating the belt at least twice a year with a high-quality, colourless leather balm, ideally one based on beeswax. The balm nourishes the leather and increases its resistance to moisture. If the belt gets wet, never dry it near an open fire, on a hot radiator, or in direct, intense summer sunlight. The leather could over-dry, harden, and crack. Let it air dry naturally at room temperature. Minor variations in colour and surface texture are natural characteristics of handcrafted leather, giving each piece a unique historical patina.

Safety Warning

Although the belt is very massive and strong, it is constructed exclusively as a historical clothing accessory. Under no circumstances should you use it for tying or pulling heavy loads, as an improvised abseiling rope, or for securing persons. The composite fittings and rivets are not rated for extreme pulling forces and could fail under excessive load, which could lead to serious injury.

Recommended Accessories

For this wide load-bearing belt, we highly recommend acquiring a sturdy leather sword hanger (frog) and a spacious Renaissance leather belt pouch, which will sit perfectly on the 4.5 cm (1.77 in) wide strap and complete your period appearance.
