Francisca Throwing Axe – Budget-Friendly Frankish Replica
Decoration with a Warrior's Soul
This axe is designed primarily as a costume prop and stylish interior decoration. The axe blade is hand-forged from carbon steel and features the characteristic S-shape that widens away from the haft. The raw, unfinished look of the metal adds a touch of authenticity. The hardwood handle is stained in a brown shade. Although the head is made of steel, the axe is neither hardened nor constructed for practical wood chopping, tree felling, or bushcraft activities. Modern tools from a hardware store will serve you better for such work.
The Weapon That Crushed Roman Legions and Enemy Shields
The Francisca (Latin bipennis or securis) was a deadly weapon in the hands of the Franks during the Merovingian era (approx. 500–750 AD). Its unique shape was no accident; it was perfectly balanced for throwing. Warriors threw them en masse just before close combat at a distance of up to 12 meters (approx. 40 ft). The goal was not only to hit the enemy but primarily to destroy or disable their shield. Thanks to its specific curvature, the axe tended to bounce unpredictably upon hitting the ground, causing chaos and fear in enemy lines. It was used even in the times of Charlemagne and found its way to the Anglo-Saxons in Britain.

Even though it is a decoration, carbon steel can corrode. Keep the metal parts dry and occasionally wipe them with a cloth and a little oil (e.g., WD-40 or gun oil). You can revive the wooden handle with beeswax or linseed oil, which will highlight the wood grain and protect it from moisture.
Safety Warning
Please bear in mind that this is a decorative item. Although it is a replica of a throwing weapon, for safety reasons, do not use it for throwing at targets or living beings. The construction of the head attachment to the handle is not designed for repeated impacts, and the head could loosen and cause injury. The edge is not supplied sharp like functional tools.
