Buccaneer Pirate Cutlass with Brass Basket Hilt
Construction and Materials
The blade is made of carbon steel with a carbon content of approximately 0.8%. This guarantees a more authentic look than stainless steel decorations. The blade is oil-hardened to approx. 42 HRC. This hardness ensures the blade is tough and resists snapping, but it is softer than professional fencing weapons; therefore, the cutlass is intended primarily as a costume and decorative prop, not for contact fencing. The edge is approx. 0.2 mm thick, so please exercise caution when handling.
The hilt is designed for a firm grip. The wooden core is covered in black leather and reinforced with twisted brass wire wrapping. The hand is protected by a prominent brass basket guard (shell), which extends into a knuckle bow. Included is a scabbard covered in black leather, fitted with a brass throat and chape, adding elegance to the weapon.
Historical Context: Buccaneers and Their Weapons
This weapon is inspired by the armament of the so-called Buccaneers. Originally, these were French hunters on the island of Hispaniola who smoked meat on wooden frames called boucan. During the 17th century, they became feared pirates operating in the West Indies, often with the tacit approval of European powers fighting against Spain. Among their most famous leaders was Henry Morgan. On cramped ship decks, where yards and ropes got in the way, long rapiers were impractical. Therefore, sailors preferred these shorter, robust cutlasses (hangers), which were powerful in a slash and also served as tools for cutting ropes.
Carbon Steel Care
Since the blade is not stainless, it requires your care to prevent rust. After every use, or even after simply touching it with your hands, wipe the blade dry and oil it (e.g., with gun oil or WD-40). Store it in a dry place. You can polish the brass parts with a metal polish to maintain their golden shine.
