A Tank Among Shields
The core of the shield is a thick wooden board (approx. 1 cm), but that is only half the story. The key feature is the steel hardware. The circumference is protected by a steel rim (band), which prevents the wood from splitting under heavy edge strikes. The front is reinforced by a steel cross with a central boss (umbo). While the boss is massive, on this model it serves primarily to deflect blows and reinforce the structure, rather than providing a cavity for the hand (this shield is not center-gripped).
On the black-painted back, you will find a forearm carriage system: two sturdy, riveted leather straps. One serves for your forearm to pass through, and the other acts as a firm grip for your hand. This distributes the shield's weight more effectively, which you will appreciate, as 4.5 kg on one arm is significant.
Usage and Purpose
A shield is not just for protecting your body, but also your weapon. Experienced fencers know that blocking edge-on-edge ruins a sword. This shield is ideal for:

Maintenance and Safety
Wood is a natural material. Keep the steel parts dry and oil them regularly (e.g., with WD-40) to prevent rust. Treat the leather straps with leather balm to prevent cracking due to sweat. Disclaimer: The manufacturer labels this shield for "light fencing." While the material makes the shield very durable, nicks and dents will naturally occur during hard contact combat. This is not a defect, but proof of functionality—the shield sacrifices itself for your protection.
