Hand-and-a-Half Sword "Bastard"
Are you looking for a versatile weapon that bridges the gap between the speed of an arming sword and the crushing power of a two-hander? This hand-and-a-half sword, historically known as a "bastard sword," is the ideal choice for those who want to feel a solid piece of steel in their hands. Weighing over 2 kg (4.5 lbs), it is a robust tool that does not forgive weakness but rewards momentum and durability. Hand-and-a-Half Sword "Bastard" for Stage Combat | Late Medieval
Design and Handling
This sword is built to last. The blade, hand-forged from carbon steel, features a distinct central fuller that visually lightens its profile. The grip is long enough to be held with both hands (for powerful strikes) or just one hand (for extended reach). It is wrapped in black leather and divided in the middle by a riser, which aids in grip orientation.
A major advantage for practical use is the hilt assembly. The blade tang passes through the entire handle, and the massive octagonal pommel is secured at the end with a double-screwed connection. This means that if the sword loosens after a tough fight, you can easily disassemble, clean, and retighten it securely.
Historical Context: Why "Bastard"?
The term "bastard" originated not as an insult, but as a technical description. These swords were neither purely one-handed nor purely two-handed—they were "hybrids." They appeared in the 14th century as a response to improving plate armor. A knight needed a weapon that he could grip with both hands to deliver a crushing blow or use for leverage in close-quarters combat when necessary.

Care and Maintenance
The sword is made of carbon steel, which is not stainless and requires care. Wipe the blade dry after every use and oil it (e.g., with WD-40 or gun oil). Due to the screwed construction, we recommend checking the tightness of the pommel nut before every use to ensure safe handling.
Important Safety Notice
Although the manufacturer declares this sword as "suitable for fencing," at Outfit4Events we play fair. We do not provide a warranty against blade breakage. With a weight of over 2 kg, high kinetic energy is generated during strikes, placing extreme stress on the material. Therefore, we sell the sword as a decorative replica. Any practical use (drills, stage combat) is done entirely at your own risk. We recommend it primarily for solo drills (strength training), costume purposes, or controlled theatrical performances.
Hand-and-a-Half Sword is rustically processed and battle-ready. (Although at your own risk - no guarantee from our side!)
