Leather Roman Military Sandals Caligae in Heavy-Duty Profi Design
The Footwear That Conquered the Ancient World
Caligae (singular caliga) were the iconic and highly practical military footwear of the Roman legions. Their characteristic open construction, consisting of a complex network of leather straps, was not a fashion statement, but a purely functional element. During long and exhausting marches across Europe and North Africa, this design allowed the feet to breathe, effectively preventing fungal infections, painful blisters, and trench foot. The straps were strategically placed to avoid pressure on the joints while firmly securing the ankle and instep. The footwear is carefully cut to correspond in shape with historical finds from the era of ancient Rome.

Proper Care for Longevity
This footwear is made from genuine cowhide and requires your regular care to maintain its flexibility and durability. Straight from production, the leather is already treated with a beeswax balm. Regularly rub leather oil, balm, or high-quality wax into it. This will soften the leather, help it conform better to your foot, and increase its moisture resistance. Bear in mind that the leather may darken slightly after the application of these products. Any scuffs can be easily masked and colour-matched with standard shoe polish.
Always let the sandals dry slowly at normal room temperature. Never dry them near an open fire, on a hot radiator, or in direct sunlight – the leather would irreparably stiffen and crack. If you choose a colour other than black, dark brown, or natural light, please note that the special covering lacquer paint may crack or flake over time in areas of bending and heavy stress.
Practical Advice for Safe Use
When wearing these, remember that a historical leather sole behaves differently than modern synthetic materials. It can be noticeably slippery on wet grass, smooth cobblestones, or in mud. Therefore, exercise increased caution when running, fencing, or during combat demonstrations.
If you wear orthotic insoles and opt for our custom-made footwear, it is essential that you physically post these insoles to us. The shoes will then be sewn exactly to accommodate the insoles perfectly, ensuring your maximum comfort.
We highly recommend you purchase thick woollen socks (known as udones) or linen leg wraps from our range to accompany these Roman sandals, as they will significantly increase your comfort in colder weather and protect your feet from potential pressure sores.
