Display Your Swords with Honour
This stand is not just a practical accessory, but above all, a decorative item. It is ideal for any collector, enthusiast of Japanese culture, or martial artist. Place it on a shelf, a chest of drawers, or in your study and show everyone your passion for history and craftsmanship. The stand is designed to be stable and securely hold your valuable pieces. Thanks to its minimalist design, the swords themselves are given full prominence.
This is a decorative item and is not intended for practical use.
The History of the Katanakake Stand
In Japan, the sword was not merely a weapon; it represented the soul of the samurai. Its care and storage were governed by strict rules and etiquette. Katanakake (刀掛) stands became widely used during the Edo period (1603–1868), when samurai spent more time in peace and proudly displayed their swords in their homes.
Interestingly, the way the sword was placed in the stand had a specific meaning. If the hilt (tsuka) faced to the left, it signalled peace and trust, as drawing the sword would be slower. A hilt facing to the right, conversely, indicated alertness or hostile intentions.
Caring for Your Stand
To maintain the stand's beauty, simple care is all that's needed. Regularly wipe dust off it with a dry, soft cloth. Avoid using water, cleaning agents, and placing it in direct sunlight or in high-humidity environments to prevent the wood from cracking and the paint from fading.
