Narrow High Gothic Leather Belt with Cast Figure-Eight Buckle

Historical Context and Proper Wearing of the Belt

During the High Gothic period (13th and 14th centuries), more fitted clothing cuts became prevalent, which went hand in hand with the popularity of more elegant and narrower belts. The two-part buckle, often referred to as a figure-eight or spectacle buckle, represented a very popular and practical solution for secure fastening. The belt is firmly attached to it by honest hand-stitching using strong linen thread. This belt is classically worn fastened at the waist. To achieve maximum period authenticity, we recommend looping the longer end of the belt under the fastened strap and letting it hang loosely straight down. This style of wearing visually elongated the figure and fully corresponded to medieval fashion trends of the time. The product is perfectly suited for portraying a burgher, a travelling merchant, or a common mercenary.

Leather Care and Safety Principles

In order for genuine cowhide to retain its natural suppleness, beauty, and toughness over the long term, it requires regular care. We recommend treating the strap at least twice a year with a high-quality leather balm containing beeswax. If you get caught in the rain on your expedition and the belt gets wet, always dry it very slowly at room temperature. Strictly avoid drying it near an open fire, on a hot radiator, or with a hair dryer – the leather would irreversibly harden and crack. Also, remember that this is a historical clothing accessory. Do not use the belt as a securing element when climbing or for hanging extremely heavy loads (such as massive two-handed swords without a support system), as the strap could stretch unsightly over time.
