Adjustable Leather Helmet Liner Parachute Suspension System

Historical Context and the Necessity of a Liner

Wearing a steel helmet directly on a bare head or just over a thin piece of cloth was tantamount to suicide in history. Any strike to the helmet would be transferred directly to the skull. That is why shock-absorbing systems were sewn or riveted into helmets. This type of liner consists of leather "tongues" connected at the top by a cord. The system works like a sprung net, keeping the steel bowl of the helmet at a safe distance from your skull. The kinetic energy of the blow is thus distributed much better. Similar adjustable systems were used in the later Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and the principle was maintained even in 20th-century military helmets.

Installation and Proper Leather Care

This product is supplied as a separate accessory and must be firmly installed into the helmet. The bottom edge of the liner must be reliably attached to the helmet bowl – most often, the leather is riveted around the circumference or firmly sewn with a strong thread to a pre-existing leather band inside the helmet. By subsequently tightening or loosening the top cord, you can easily adjust the height of the helmet so that the eye slits line up perfectly with your eyes. Human sweat is aggressive, so let the liner air out thoroughly after every event. Treat it regularly with a high-quality beeswax leather balm so that the calfskin retains its softness and does not start to crack.

Safety Warnings

For heavy full-contact combat (e.g., Buhurt, Battle of the Nations, or HEMA), a leather liner alone is not enough! It is essential to always combine it with another shock-absorbing layer. Never dry a sweaty liner near an open fire or on a hot radiator. Rapid drying causes irreversible damage and hardening of the leather, which then ceases to fulfill its safety and comfort function.

Recommended Accessories

For maximum safety and comfort, we strongly recommend wearing a thick padded arming cap beneath this liner and always securing the helmet with a quality leather chin strap so that it does not slip off your head upon impact.

Please note: This product is handmade from genuine leather, a purely natural material. Minor differences in colour and surface texture are natural characteristics that confirm the authenticity of honest craftsmanship. These minor imperfections do not reduce the utilitarian value of the product in any way. Each piece is, to some extent, a truly unique original.

I inquired about having a custom sized liner made for a very large pembridge style great helm. There was no issues at all and the liner is perfect.
