Custom Leather Back Scabbard with Striking Lacing
History, Myths, and Fantasy Reality
From the perspective of historical martial arts and real combat, wearing a long sword on your back is a massive myth popularized by modern films, video games, and fantasy literature. The human arm is simply not long enough to smoothly draw a 90 cm (35 in) blade over the shoulder from an enclosed scabbard. Historically, two-handed swords were sometimes carried on the back, but exclusively for transport, not for a lightning-fast quick-draw. However, in the world of LARP and cosplay, the back scabbard is an absolute classic! It provides you with immense freedom of movement, prevents the sword from tangling between your legs in dense forests, and gives your silhouette the unmistakable look of a seasoned monster hunter.
Proper Wearing and Maintenance
The back scabbard is worn diagonally across the chest and back, much like an arrow quiver. The entire set is made to measure. After completing your order, we will ask you to provide the dimensions of your weapon so the scabbard hugs the blade perfectly. You can easily adjust the wide carrying strap, which has a generous standard length of 150 cm (59 in), using the sturdy structural steel buckle. If you have a broader build and need a longer strap, simply mention this requirement in your order notes. To prevent the thick leather (up to 3.5 mm / 0.14 in) from hardening and to keep it protected from the rain, regularly treat it with a high-quality beeswax leather balm. Occasionally rub the metal buckle lightly with oil to prevent rust.
Safety and Important Warnings
Keep in mind that drawing a weapon from your back requires practice and caution. If you are using a sharp blade, there is a real risk that a careless draw could slice through the leather and injure your neck or shoulder. Carrying sharp weapons is entirely at your own risk. Never sheath a wet or muddy sword; the trapped moisture inside the leather will quickly cause your weapon to corrode. Never dry leather products near an open flame or on a hot radiator, as the leather will irreversibly crack and deform.
Recommended Accessories
For a flawless fantasy appearance, we highly recommend pairing this back scabbard with a long woollen cloak featuring a deep hood, and a high-quality replica of a longsword or bastard sword with a blunt blade, ideal for safe play at LARP events.
