High Gothic Leather Boots with Pointed Toe and Side Buckles
Historical Context and Choosing the Right Height
Long and pointed shoes, often called poulaines or crakows, experienced a huge boom during the Gothic period (especially in the 14th and 15th centuries). As a general rule: the longer and more eccentric the point, the higher and more significant the status of the wearer. Fastening via a series of small buckles on the side was also a popular contemporary detail. The standard height of this model is approximately 35 cm (13.8 in). If you select the custom-made option, you can choose your own overall boot height (measured from the floor). For functional and anatomical reasons, however, we strongly advise against choosing a height that reaches higher than 5 cm (2 in) below your kneecap, so the boot does not hinder comfortable knee flexion. The maximum leather height for custom orders is around 48 cm (18.9 in).
Material, Colour Variants, and Custom Adjustments
The upper of the boots is honestly sewn from high-quality cowhide and comes factory-treated with a beeswax balm that softens and impregnates the leather. The sole is equipped with a practical small heel. By default, the leather is supplied in black, dark brown, and light brown (natural) colours. Other colour shades are achieved by applying a special topcoat dye. Please be aware that this topcoat has the properties of patent leathers, and due to bending and stress, small cracks may form over time or the coating may crumble locally. For occasional weekend wear, however, this surface treatment will serve excellently.
If you wear orthotic insoles and choose custom-made boots, it is absolutely necessary to send these insoles to us in advance. They will be precisely and functionally built directly into the footwear, ensuring the boots fit you like a glove and provide proper support for your feet.
Leather Care and Safe Movement
To maintain a long lifespan, flexibility, and water resistance of the hide, it is necessary to nourish the boots regularly. Available waxes, leather oils, or standard shoe polish work excellently for this, and they also easily cover any scuffs acquired during wear. Never dry the footwear near a direct heat source, such as an open fire or a hot radiator, as the leather would irreversibly harden and crack.
When wearing historical footwear, do not forget that a smoother leather sole requires caution. On wet grass, in mud, and especially on smooth modern surfaces (cobblestones, tarmac), there is an increased risk of slipping. Keep this fact in mind, especially when stage fencing or running fast.
