Light Brown Leather Roman Military Sandals Caligae

Historical Context and Usage of Caligae

Sandals called caligae (singular caliga) were the standard military footwear of Roman legionaries and auxiliary troops for centuries, from the Roman Republic through to the early Empire. They were so iconic that they even gave the famous Roman Emperor Caligula his nickname, which translates as "Little Boot". Original Roman finds featured a leather sole studded with massive iron hobnails, which provided traction in the field and served as a weapon in close combat. For safety reasons and to protect modern surfaces, this model is supplied with a standard flat sole without hobnails. The sandals are ideal for historical reenactment, LARP events, ancient festivals, and theatrical performances.

Fastening and Features of the Sandals

The entire upper of the shoe consists of an ingenious network of sturdy leather straps. Putting them on is relatively simple – you slip your foot into the sandal and thread a long leather lace through the eyelets at the ends of the straps across the instep, drawing the whole shoe together and securing it around the ankle. Thanks to this, the sandal perfectly adheres to the foot and adapts to its shape.

How to Properly Care for the Footwear

These shoes are treated from the factory with a high-quality leather balm containing beeswax. To ensure the sandals serve you as long as possible, it is recommended to grease them regularly. You can use any available leather balm or oil. Keep in mind that natural leather darkens slightly and softens after applying fat. If your shoes are ordered in a colour other than the basic natural, brown, or black, please note that they are coated with a special covering dye. Over time, this dye may begin to crack or crumble on stressed areas and folds. Therefore, these coloured variants are recommended more for occasional wear, such as weddings or infrequent festivals, where they will serve their purpose without any issues.

Safety and Important Warnings

The smooth leather sole can be slippery on wet grass, mud, or modern smooth paving, so pay extra attention when walking. Under no circumstances should the shoes be washed in a washing machine or dried on a direct heat source (radiator, near a camp fire), as the leather could be irreversibly damaged, harden, and crack. As this is a historical replica, the footwear does not feature modern orthopaedic shaping or cushioning layers.

Size Selection and Custom Fit

These Roman sandals are available in standard European sizes (EU). If the custom-made option is chosen, it is necessary to fill in the relevant measurement chart for both of your feet after placing the order. If you wear orthopaedic insoles for healthy walking, please send them to our address. The shoemaker will precisely and permanently incorporate these insoles directly into the sandals, ensuring the shoes fit you perfectly and provide the maximum possible comfort.

Recommended Equipment for a Legionary

For cooler evenings on a campaign, we highly recommend acquiring period-accurate woollen socks (known as udones) sewn using traditional techniques to go with these sandals. To complete the perfect look of a Roman soldier, you will also need a linen tunic and a military belt called a cingulum militare with typical leather and brass pteruges to protect the groin, which can be found in our antiquity range.
