Iberian Falcata with Medusa Pommel | Silver Plated | Marto
A Fusion of Deadly Elegance and Art
The Falcata is characterized by its forward-curved blade, which combines the chopping power of an axe with the agility of a sword. The blade of this replica is made of high-quality AISI 420 stainless steel and polished to a mirror finish. However, what makes this piece unique is its hilt. The hilt is made of Zamak alloy and is richly silver-plated.
The handle is shaped to protect the warrior's hand and is clad in a material that faithfully imitates ivory, decorated with delicate floral engravings. The pinnacle of the artistic craftsmanship is the pommel in the shape of the head of Medusa, the mythical Gorgon with snakes instead of hair, whose gaze was said to turn men to stone. This detail gives the sword a mystical and formidable aura.
Historical Context: The Terror of the Romans
The Iberians, the original inhabitants of the Iberian Peninsula (modern-day Spain and Portugal), used the Falcata from approximately the 5th century BC to the 1st century AD. It was a weapon so effective that it could split Roman shields (scuta) and pierce helmets. The Romans encountered it especially during the Punic Wars, where Iberians fought as mercenaries on the side of Carthage. The respect for this weapon was so great that it influenced the development of the Roman Gladius itself.
Care and Maintenance
This Falcata is a jewel of your collection and therefore deserves proper care:
- The stainless steel blade is durable, but fingerprints can leave unsightly marks over time. Wipe it regularly with a soft cloth and treat it with maintenance oil.
- Clean the silver-plated parts of the handle only with a soft duster or a special silver cloth. Avoid aggressive cleaning agents that could damage the thin layer of metal.
- Do not expose the sword to humid environments to prevent oxidation of the zinc parts.
