Historical Context and Usage of the Uniform

This men's garment faithfully reflects the military fashion of the Union (the North) during the American Civil War (1861–1865). The basis of the cavalry uniform was a short dark blue jacket, the so-called "shell jacket", which, unlike the long coats of the infantry, was much more practical for horse riding. The jacket features a stand-up collar and is richly decorated with yellow piping and sleeve braids, which were the standard identification marks for belonging to cavalry regiments. A cotton shirt and a dark waistcoat were worn under the jacket. The ensemble is completed by grey-blue trousers with the typical yellow side stripe. This attire is absolutely ideal for historical reenactment, Western shooting events, theatrical performances, or historical festivals set in the second half of the 19th century.

Material Care and Maintenance

The costume is sewn from proven natural materials. The jacket, waistcoat, and trousers are made of one hundred per cent wool, which has excellent thermoregulating properties and protects against the cold and light rain. The shirt is made of one hundred per cent cotton, allowing it to absorb sweat excellently and feel pleasant against the skin. To ensure the uniform serves you for as long as possible, it is necessary to follow the correct cleaning procedures. We strongly recommend leaving the cleaning of the woollen parts (jacket, waistcoat, trousers) exclusively to a professional dry cleaner. Never wash wool in a washing machine and do not tumble dry it, as this poses a risk of irreversible shrinkage. The cotton shirt can be washed gently at 30 °C (86 °F). When ironing, always avoid direct contact of the hot iron with the decorative braids and buttons.

Recommended Accessories and Delivery Notices

To achieve the flawless look of a US Cavalry soldier, we recommend complementing the uniform with a period leather belt featuring the typical US brass buckle, riding boots with spurs, and, of course, a replica of the famous Model 1860 cavalry sabre. We would like to point out that the high leather boots, belt with pouches, knife, sabre, and hat shown in the photographs are not included in the basic delivery. However, the stylish felt slouch hat with a wide brim and crossed sabres insignia can be ordered from us as an optional item for an additional charge.

This military uniform is produced exclusively strictly made-to-measure, ensuring it provides you with complete freedom of movement in action. After completing your order, we will ask you to carefully fill in our measurement chart. Furthermore, upon your request, we will gladly make this ensemble in other colour combinations according to our fabric swatch books. Simply note your desired colour in the comment field of your order. Do not forget to always include the swatch book number, the letter of the colour, and the colour name (e.g. 03-A-yellow). If you choose a fabric with a different composition, the price may be adjusted, which we will, of course, consult with you before starting production.
