Master Ringeck's Practice Federschwert with Flared Schilt for HEMA

Features and Use of the Training Longsword

This sword is purpose-built for full-contact Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA). The blade is forged from high-quality spring steel, expertly heat-treated to an ideal hardness of 49-53 HRC. This allows it to withstand heavy impacts and minimizes edge damage. A prominent fuller runs down the center of the blade, reducing weight while maintaining excellent structural strength. The sword has a calibrated flex rating of 16 kg (35 lbs). This slightly higher stiffness gives you absolute dominance in blade-binding techniques, yet the blade still bends safely upon a strong lunge. For maximum partner protection, the point is finished with a thickened, spatulated rounded safety tip.

The 25 cm (9.84 inches) wide straight crossguard securely catches the opponent's blows. At the base of the blade, there is a significantly flared and profiled schilt, forming an impenetrable barrier for your thumbs and fingers during specific half-swording grips. The 26 cm (10.24 inches) long grip provides plenty of room for a two-handed hold even in massive fencing gloves and is tightly wrapped with a durable black cord for a secure grip. A massive pear-shaped steel pommel forms the perfect counterweight, allowing the sword to react instantly to changes in direction.

Historical Context of Federschwert Swords

The Federschwert (or Fechtfeder) was a specialized training tool that spread massively in the 15th and 16th centuries, especially in German-speaking areas. Famous masters like Sigmund Ringeck or Hans Talhoffer taught deadly martial arts with the longsword, but for daily drill and guild tournaments (e.g., the Marxbrüder brotherhood), it was necessary to use a weapon that didn't kill. The narrow blade simulated the weight of a real sword, while the flared schilt replaced the missing mass and protected the hands. Today's HEMA fencers respectfully use this time-tested design to revive ancient master techniques in the safety of modern gyms.

Care, Maintenance, and Safety Guidelines

In order for this training sword to serve you reliably for many years, it requires regular care. High-carbon spring steel naturally succumbs to corrosion. After every training session, wipe the blade and crossguard thoroughly dry and apply a thin layer of gun oil or a special conservation wax. The weapon is intended exclusively for fencing against steel practice swords of similar parameters. Never strike hard, unyielding objects with it, such as wooden posts, stones, or scaffolding pipes, as this could destroy the weapon. During contact fencing, always use protective equipment: a certified HEMA mask with back-of-head protection, a heavy gambeson, and special gloves for historical fencing.

For comfortable transport of the weapon to training, we recommend acquiring a high-quality padded bag for longswords and a set of weapon maintenance oils.
