Master Liechtenauer's Green Federschwert for HEMA Fencing

Features and Use of the Training Sword

This sword is designed specifically for Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA). The flexible blade with a flex rating of approximately 12 kg (26.5 lbs) ensures that it bends safely during a strong thrust, minimizing the risk of injury to your opponent. Safety in the thrust is further enhanced by the rolled tip, which effectively distributes the force of the impact over a larger area. The blade is forged from high-quality spring steel, which is optimally heat-treated to a hardness of 49-53 HRC. Thanks to this, the weapon is highly resistant to edge damage while retaining the necessary flexibility. The weapon is ideal for practicing techniques according to the old masters, free sparring, and tournament use.

The crossguard features a characteristic widening at the base of the blade (the so-called schilt), which reliably protects your fingers from the opponent's blade sliding down. This element is additionally decorated with an elegant engraving of a palmette motif. The crossguard itself has been heat-treated for extra toughness. The grip is tightly bound with a durable green cord wrapped over a leather base, providing a very comfortable hold. As a result, the sword will not slip out of your hand even when wearing a massive, sweaty fencing glove.

Historical Context of the Federschwert

This type of sword became massively widespread in the 15th and 16th centuries, especially in German-speaking countries, among famous fencing guilds such as the Marxbrüder and Federfechter. The purpose of the significantly narrowed blade and widened schilt was to simulate the weight, length, and balance of a sharp battle sword, but with much safer parameters for dynamic full-contact training. Interestingly, on many historical woodcuts from contemporary fencing manuals (e.g., by Joachim Meyer), fencers train with these weapons completely without armor, proving the trust in their safety at the time. Today, however, we strongly recommend modern protective equipment.

Care, Maintenance, and Safety Guidelines

Regular maintenance is essential for this training sword to serve you long and reliably. The blade is made of high-carbon steel, which is naturally prone to corrosion. After every training session, thoroughly wipe the blade with a dry cloth and apply a thin layer of gun oil or conservation wax. Protect the grip from excessive moisture and direct heat. The weapon is intended exclusively for fencing against other steel training swords. Never strike hard objects such as trees, rocks, masonry, or steel poles with it, as this could cause irreversible damage to the blade or injury to yourself. When fencing, always use a certified HEMA mask with back-of-head protection, a gambeson, and solid protective gloves designed for historical fencing.

A high-quality padded transport bag for weapons and a set of maintenance oils for the conservation of historical steel are an excellent practical accessory for this sword.
