Renaissance Practice Sword Meyer, Engraved HEMA Federschwert, Spring Steel
Construction and Sword Details
The blade of this sword is meticulously forged from high-quality spring steel. The sword belongs to the premium SWHZ series, which means the heat treatment process is done in-house at the manufacturer's own factory. This guarantees maximum control over the material's hardness (approx. 49-53 HRC) and structural integrity. The blade offers an excellent flex range of approximately 12 to 13 kg (26.5 to 28.7 lbs), which is the ideal value for safe thrusting during combat practice. To further enhance safety, the tip of the blade is rolled (spatulated).
The dominant feature of the weapon is the flared schilt, adorned with deep and intricate floral engraving. The grip combines a firm hold, thanks to its black genuine leather cover, with an elegant silver-coloured wire wrapping at the top and bottom. The entire hilt is topped with a massive, spirally fluted pear pommel that perfectly balances the sword. The straight crossguard features finials gracefully twisted into spirals, harmonising perfectly with the pommel's design.

Historical Context and Usage
The historical original of this sword, known as the Federschwert (feather sword), saw massive use in Renaissance Europe during the 15th and 16th centuries. These practice weapons were the primary training tools of famous fencing guilds, such as the Marxbrüder and Federfechter in the Holy Roman Empire. The purpose of the schilt was to protect the fencer's thumb and fingers during complex techniques, while the narrow, flexible blade simulated the weight and handling of a real sharp sword without the risk of fatal injury. Today, this design is the absolute standard for tournaments and training in HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts).
Safety and Sword Care
Although the sword is designed for contact fencing and has a rolled tip and measured flexibility, you must always prioritise safety. Strictly use a certified fencing mask, a padded HEMA jacket, a gorget, and heavy fencing gloves during training. The weapon is not meant for chopping into hard objects, wood, or armour, as this will lead to irreversible blade damage and the formation of dangerous burrs.
After each session, thoroughly wipe the blade with a dry cloth to remove sweat and moisture, which cause corrosion. Afterwards, treat the metal parts with a thin layer of gun oil. Occasionally treat the leather grip with a leather balm so it does not crack and retains its tactile qualities. Regularly inspect the edges of the blade and use a fine file to smooth out any burrs caused by blade-on-blade contact in a timely manner.
Recommended Accessories
With this sword, we highly recommend acquiring a durable transport bag for safe transit to your club, and thick-walled plastic blade guards for storage. For comprehensive training, this sword forms an ideal set with heavy "Knee" or "Lobster" style fencing gloves and a high-quality HEMA padded jacket.
