Medieval Arming Sword Oakeshott Type XIV/XVI with Scabbard

Are you looking for a reliable sidearm that won't betray you in the press of the battlefield or during a judicial duel? This single-handed sword, inspired by Ewart Oakeshott's typology (Type XIV with Type XVI elements), embodies the knightly armament of the late 13th and early 14th centuries. During this era, armour was becoming more resilient, and swords had to adapt—they needed to be hefty enough for the cut but stiff and acute enough for the thrust. With a blade length of 71 cm (28 in) and a point of balance just 5 cm (2 in) from the guard, this sword comes alive in your hand with incredible speed. It is the ideal choice for fencers who prefer fighting with a buckler or shield, as well as collectors demanding an authentic look. Further product information ...

Medieval Arming Sword Oakeshott Type XIV/XVI with Scabbard

Design and Historical Context

Type XIV swords are characterized by a short, broad blade that tapers significantly to a sharp point. This design ensured massive cutting power at the blade base while allowing for precise point control. This model features a high-performance spring steel blade with a prominent fuller, which lightens the structure without sacrificing rigidity. Of particular note is the unique "fusion" pommel, combining elements of disc (Type I) and faceted (Type I1) pommels, giving the sword a distinct yet historically faithful appearance.

The grip is anatomically shaped with a slight central riser and is, like the scabbard, wrapped in genuine brown leather. This ensures a firm and secure grip that won't slip even when wearing gloves. Included is a precisely crafted leather-covered wood scabbard, equipped with a suspension system for easy wear.

Material and Craftsmanship

The blade is forged from high-quality spring steel, prized for its toughness and resilience against breakage. Thanks to the distal taper (from 5 mm at the guard to 2 mm at the tip), the sword possesses fantastic dynamic properties. The weight of 1200 g (2.65 lbs) suggests that although the sword is compact, it commands authority in the cut.

Care and Maintenance

This sword is made of high-carbon steel, not stainless steel. This means it requires your care. Wipe the blade with a dry cloth after every use or touch and treat it with a preservative oil (e.g., WD-40, gun oil, or 3-in-1 oil) to prevent corrosion. I recommend occasionally treating the leather parts (grip and scabbard) with beeswax or leather conditioner to keep the material from drying out and cracking.

Safety Warnings

The sword is supplied as a sharp, fully functional "Battle-Ready" replica. It is suitable for cutting practice (tameshigiri) on soft targets. However, we explicitly warn against using it in "edge-on-edge" contact sparring against other hardened weapons—sharp edges are prone to nicks and chipping. Always handle the sword with maximum caution and the respect a sharp weapon deserves. Use is at your own risk.
