Material and Design

The tunic is crafted from a milled wool blend (88% wool), offering excellent insulation and a water-repellent felted texture. It features a loose fit with side gores (wedges) to ensure unrestricted movement during battle or daily tasks.

The standout features are the details: The cuffs and neckline are trimmed with 100% wool in a diamond twill weave, a pattern highly prized in the Viking Age. The neckline is further embellished with two-tone embroidery depicting a Celtic knot, and a hand-stitched decorative seam runs along the hem. Please note: Only the tunic is included in the delivery. The belt, pouch, trousers, and other accessories shown in the photos are sold separately.

Historical Context

The tunic was the staple garment for men in the Early Middle Ages. While commoners wore undyed wool, blue dye was more difficult to produce, often signifying wealth or status. The use of diamond twill for the borders not only added aesthetic appeal but also reinforced the edges against wear and tear.

Care Instructions

Wool is naturally self-cleaning. Airing the garment out is often sufficient. If washing is necessary, hand wash only in cold water using a wool detergent (with lanolin). Do not wring or tumble dry. Dry flat to maintain shape.
