Late Medieval Mitten Gauntlets "Schott-Sonnenberg" – 1.6 mm Steel

Historical Style: The Maximilian Transition

These gauntlets represent the Schott-Sonnenberg style, a transitional design from the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Named after typical finds from that period, this style bridges the gap between Gothic armour and the later Maximilian style. While later Maximilian armour is famous for its "fluting" (ridges), the Schott-Sonnenberg type typically features the smooth, rounded surfaces associated with the early Renaissance, designed to deflect blows effectively. It corresponds to the era of Emperor Maximilian I (reigned 1493–1519).

Construction and Features

Handcrafted from robust **1.6 mm (approx. 16 gauge) mild steel**, these gauntlets are built to last. * **Articulation:** The back of the hand, wrist, and thumb feature multiple sliding plates (lames) connected with brass rivets. This "lobster-tail" construction ensures you can grip your sword or polearm securely without stiffness. * **Protection:** A long, pointed cuff protects the wrist and forearm. The edges of the steel are flanged (rolled) to prevent sharp edges and increase structural strength. * **Comfort & Fit:** The gauntlets come with a stitched-in inner glove made of soft black suede leather (approx. glove size 9). Inside, leather straps across the fingers provide better grip and control. The thumb is reinforced with an extra leather insert. * **Finish:** The exterior is polished steel with decorative brass rivets, while the interior is blackened to provide basic rust resistance.

Usage and Care

**Maintenance:** Since these are made from mild steel, they are susceptible to rust if not cared for. * Always wipe them dry after use. * Apply a thin layer of oil (such as **Ballistol**, WD-40, or mineral oil) regularly to protect the surface. * Store in a dry place. **Safety Warning:** These gauntlets are suitable for **reenactment, stage combat, and LARP**. While 1.6 mm steel is thick and durable, we do not explicitly rate them for full-contact medieval combat (such as Buhurt or Battle of the Nations) where extreme force is used, as the tempering of the steel is standard. For general historical fencing and sparring, they provide excellent protection. **Combine with:** These look fantastic when paired with a sallet or armet helmet and a breastplate from the corresponding late medieval era.
