Mitten gauntlets were extensively used from the third decade of the 15th century. They belonged to favourite outfit of infantry soldiers, who wanted to protect their hands in fights with pikes and halberds. Mitten gauntlets wore also knights, but their use seems to have been much favoured by the mercenaries and foot soldiers of the 15th century.
