Universal Preservation Oil Ballistol for Historical Weapons and Gear
The History of the Legendary Army Lubricant
The story of this exceptional oil, Ballistol, dates back to 1904. The German Imperial Army of the time was looking for a universal product that soldiers could use to maintain their entire kit – from the steel barrels of their rifles to the wooden stocks, leather straps, and hardened boots in the trenches. The result was this unique alkaline oil. Since those days, Ballistol has become an invaluable helper not only for soldiers but also for hunters, craftsmen, and today, for us re-enactors and fencers who need to keep our gear in battle-ready condition without signs of corrosion.
Practical Application and Proper Use
This product is supplied in a practical bottle with a volume of 100 ml (3.38 fl oz), equipped with a dropper for very precise dosing. Ballistol has an extreme creeping ability, reliably reaching even the smallest creases of plate armour or riveted chainmail rings.
- Steel and Metals: Apply a thin layer of oil to a clean blade or armour. Ballistol neutralises acidic residues (e.g., aggressive sweat from your hands) and creates a reliable protective film against rust that never dries out or resinifies.
- Leather: Massage a few drops into smooth leather. It restores its suppleness, elasticity, and improves its water resistance. It works absolute wonders, especially on historical footwear, pouches, and belts.
- Wood: Rub Ballistol into the wooden handle of a sword or the shaft of a spear. It beautifully enhances the grain of the wood and protects the material from moisture and rot.
Important Considerations for Maintenance
Although Ballistol is dermatologically tested and very friendly to human skin, keep a few important principles in mind. Never use it on suede or rough leather, as the fine fibres could stick together permanently. When applying it to light-coloured leather, expect the treated area to darken slightly. When mixed with water, this oil emulsifies and takes on a milky-white colour; however, as soon as the water evaporates, the protective film is fully restored.
