Medieval Wimpel / Headscarf Made of Cotton, Natural Color

Details and Use of the Cotton Wimpel

This Medieval Wimpel is sewn from a plain, undyed cotton fabric that is light and breathable. The edges are elegantly finished with a rolled hem. Its rectangular shape and generous dimensions (approx. 180 x 50 cm / 71 x 20 inches) allow for a variety of wearing styles. In a historical context, you can use it as an authentic head covering – as a Wimpel for a medieval lady or as a simple Headscarf for a woman of lower status. Historically, the Wimpel was wrapped around the forehead, chin, and back of the head, always covering the hair. Instructions on how to tie an authentic Wimpel can be found in our blog post.

In a modern context, you can wear it as:

  • A stylish turban or headband.
  • A light stole over the shoulders.
  • An elegant scarf wrapped around the neck.

The product is one-size and in a natural color that easily combines with other garments.

Historical Context: Headwear in the Middle Ages

In the Middle Ages, wearing head coverings was customary for married women, which is also reflected in the German saying “unter die Haube kommen” (to get under the hood/head covering, meaning to get married). Covering the hair symbolised a woman's status, modesty, and social standing. Popular medieval head coverings included, besides the Wimpel, veils, coifs, Bundhauben, Gebende, Rise, and chaplets.

The Wimpel was used to cover the hair and neck and was particularly popular during the High Middle Ages. The method of tying the Wimpel is documented in historical sources, such as the illuminated parchment manuscript *World Chronicle* by Rudolf von Ems (around 1300) or the famous *Maciejowski Bible* (also known as the Crusader Bible) from the 13th century.

Interesting Fact:

The Wimpel often formed part of a more complex hairstyle or head covering, being combined with other accessories such as the Gebende (a strip of fabric under the chin) or the Rise (a cloth wrapped around the head).

Care Instructions for Your Cotton Product

To ensure your Medieval Wimpel / Headscarf serves you well and looks new for a long time, proper care is important.

  • Washing: Machine wash at 40°C (104°F) on a gentle cycle is recommended.
  • Drying: It is not suitable for tumble drying. Air drying, ideally hung up, is best.
  • Ironing: It can be ironed at a medium temperature, ideally while still damp, to minimise creasing.

Important: Do not use aggressive bleaches or chemical cleaning agents, as they could damage the cotton fibers or the natural color. Extremě high temperatures during washing or drying can lead to shrinkage or damage to the fabric.
