Roman Bronze Bow Fibula, Strongly-Profiled Type, 2 Sizes

A Piece of Rome on Your Garment

This fibula is characterised by a high, arched bow and a flared headplate that elegantly covers the spring coil. It is a design that was not only aesthetic but also highly functional and durable. Fibulae in the ancient world served as the modern safety pin—they were indispensable for fastening garments that had no buttons. This particular type was widespread throughout the Empire, from Britain to the Rhine and Danube frontiers, making it a versatile accessory for a wide range of characters from the early and high imperial periods.

Honest Craftsmanship with Ancient Techniques

Each fibula is made using the lost-wax casting method (cire perdue), which was also extensively used by Roman artisans. Thanks to this process, each fibula has a unique character and perfect details, including a hand-wound spring that functions on the same principle as original finds—this is not a modern latch. This guarantees not only visual but also functional authenticity.

How to Use a Fibula Correctly

Using a fibula is simple but requires a little practice. It functions like a safety pin and is intended for thicker fabrics like wool or linen.

  1. Hold the fibula by the bow and carefully release the pin from the catch-plate. Be careful, the pin is sharp!
  2. Gather a sufficient amount of the fabric you want to fasten with the pin (e.g., the two corners of a cloak on the shoulder).
  3. Push the pin through the gathered fabric.
  4. Guide the tip of the pin back into the catch-plate at the end of the fibula.
  5. The tension from the spring and the fabric will hold the pin securely in place.

Please note: Do not use the fibula on modern, delicate fabrics, as the thicker pin could damage them.

Product Care

Over time, bronze acquires a natural patina that is historically desirable. To keep it clean, simply wipe the fibula with a soft, dry cloth.

  • Do: Store the fibula in a dry place to prevent excessive oxidation.
  • Do not: Do not use chemical polishes that could remove the patina. Avoid excessively bending the pin, as this could weaken the metal.
