Viking Warrior Wide Leather Belt with Braided Edges

Appearance and Construction

This wide leather belt immediately captures attention with its dominant width, which provides excellent support for your waist. It is crafted from several layers of high-quality, approximately 1.8–2 mm thick genuine leather in a deep black. The central panel is smooth and reinforced, while the top and bottom edges are adorned with meticulous hand-lacing, which adds a distinctive braided texture and enhances its durability against wear and tear.

The front of the belt fastens with two parallel, narrower leather straps. Each strap features its own solid brass buckle, allowing for easy and reliable adjustment. This dual-buckle system ensures the belt sits securely and does not slip, even during vigorous activity.

Back in Time: Purpose and Significance

In the medieval period, wide belts were far more than a fashion statement. For a warrior, they served several crucial functions. Primarily, they were used to hang weapons such as a sword, axe, or dagger, along with other essential equipment like a coin pouch or a waterskin. Furthermore, their width offered additional core support and partial protection for the abdomen, especially when worn over a gambeson or chainmail hauberk. A substantial belt was also a symbol of status and wealth—the more ornate and well-crafted it was, the more prominent its owner.

A Point of History

Did you know that the multiple-buckle system was not just a matter of design? It allowed soldiers to quickly shed parts of their gear in an emergency, such as falling into water where the weight of their armour could drag them down. A swift unbuckling could be a lifesaver.

Proper Use and Care

Wrap the belt around your waist over your tunic, gambeson, or other layers of clothing. Tighten both straps so that the belt fits snugly but does not restrict your movement or breathing.

How to care for your belt:

  • Store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
  • To maintain the leather's suppleness, treat it periodically with a leather balm or oil.
  • Protect the belt from prolonged exposure to water. If it gets wet, allow it to air-dry naturally at room temperature.
  • The brass buckles can be polished with a soft cloth to maintain their shine.

Important Note: Never dry the belt on a radiator or near another direct heat source, as the leather could crack and harden. As this is a natural product, slight variations in shade and texture may occur, which is a testament to its authenticity.
