Historical Context and Technical Design
This model is inspired by archaeological finds and iconography from the early 4th century AD, the era of the Late Roman Empire (the Dominate). During this time, tunic styles evolved, yet their core functionality remained. Red was the preeminent color of the Roman military, representing blood, war, and martial prowess. It served as the primary base layer beneath armor such as the Lorica Hamata (mail) or Squamata (scale), but was also the standard daily attire within the castra. The tunic is made from sturdy, breathable cotton, which excels at moisture-wicking and remains comfortable against the skin. The simple "T-cut" with short sleeves allows for unrestricted arm movement, vital when training with the pilum or gladius.

Care and Maintenance
To ensure your tunic lasts through many campaigns, we recommend the following:
- Washing: Wash at 30–40°C (86–104°F). Cotton may shrink at higher temperatures. Wash with similar colors as the red dye may bleed initially.
- Drying: Avoid tumble dryers. Air-dry on a hanger to maintain the garment's shape.
- Ironing: You may iron on a high setting (cotton setting), preferably while slightly damp.
Safety and Usage
Please be aware that cotton is not fire-resistant. Exercise caution near campfires; flying sparks can easily burn holes into the fabric. This tunic does not provide protection against mechanical injuries such as cuts, thrusts, or impacts. It is purely an apparel layer.
Recommended Accessories
Your legionary impression is incomplete without the proper accoutrements. We recommend pairing this tunic with a Cingulum Militare (military belt) adorned with brass plates to cinch the waist authentically. For period-correct footwear, add a pair of leather Caligae, and for colder climates, choose a wool Sagum or Paenula cloak dating to the 4th century.
