Medieval Steel Knee Cops (Poleyns), 14th-15th Century, 18 Gauge

The Key to Mobility and Protection

These plate poleyns are designed to conform to the shape of the knee while minimally restricting your movement. You can wear them on their own over padded chausses or maille, or integrate them as part of a full leg harness. The simple yet proven system of leather straps ensures they can be secured in moments and will stay firmly in place, even in the heat of battle.

Please Note: This is a replica intended for costume use, LARP, theatre, light combat reenactment, or display. The material thickness (18 gauge / 1.2 mm) is not rated for full-contact combat sports like HEMA steel sparring, Buhurt (HMB), or the Battle of the Nations. For these activities, armour of at least 14 gauge (2 mm) thickness is required.

Poleyns Through History

The Birth of Essential Protection

Plate poleyns emerged in the 14th century in response to the growing need to protect vulnerable joints, which until then were only covered by maille or padded defences. The knee was a frequent target for infantry, as an injury there could quickly disable even a heavily armoured knight. Poleyns became one of the first independent elements of plate armour and the cornerstone for the development of the full leg harness, which consisted of thigh plates (cuisses), poleyns, and shin plates (greaves).

A Knight's Achilles' Heel

Although poleyns provided excellent frontal protection for the knee, the back of the joint—the popliteal fossa—remained vulnerable. This area contains crucial tendons and arteries, and a precise thrust from a dagger or other narrow weapon could be fatal. This is why some later poleyns developed side wings (aillettes) to offer at least partial protection from the side and rear, a feature which also became a key indicator for dating and regional styles.

Caring for Your New Armour

To ensure your poleyns last as long as possible and retain their shine, proper care is essential. Steel is prone to rust, but with minimal maintenance, you can keep it in perfect condition.

  • After each use, wipe the armour down thoroughly with a dry cloth to remove any moisture.
  • Apply a thin coat of protective oil (such as Ballistol, WD-40, or even food-grade mineral oil) to the entire surface.
  • Store the armour in a dry place, away from humidity.
  • Occasionally treat the leather straps with a leather conditioner to prevent them from drying out and cracking.
