Heavy Duty Spear Point Tee Hinge, Black Antique, 15cm
Robust Design and an Honest Aesthetic
This "Tee" style hinge consists of a vertical part for mounting on the frame and a longer, horizontal strap for attaching to the door leaf. The strap is elegantly tapered and finishes in a decorative spear point. The entire surface of the hinge has a rough, hammered texture, giving it a rustic and handcrafted appearance. It is precision-cast from steel for maximum strength and treated with a traditional blackened finish.
Ideal for Gates, Doors, and Furniture
Tee hinges are a traditional and reliable solution for hanging doors and gates. This decorative model will look fantastic on the door of a garden shed, a cellar, or on the gate of a country cottage. It is also ideal for furniture, such as the lids of large chests, cabinet doors, or shutters in a historical style.
A Nod to Traditional Construction
The T-hinge is a design element that was developed specifically for "ledge and brace" doors—doors constructed from vertical planks held together by horizontal ledges. The long strap of the hinge was fixed across this horizontal ledge, which gave the entire door leaf exceptional strength and prevented it from sagging. Thanks to this functionality and simplicity, it was the most common type of hinge on farm buildings, castle gates, and simple homes for many centuries.
A Fascinating Detail from the Middle Ages
A feature of many medieval doors was a small, grated window, sometimes called a "grille" or a "Judas window." It allowed the inhabitants of the house to safely check who was outside without having to open the massive, heavy door. Even this small window often had its own miniature, ornate hinges and a latch, where a blacksmith could demonstrate their skill on a small scale.
Installation and Care
How to Install the Product
First, attach the vertical part of the hinge (the T-base) to the door frame. Then, support the door leaf in the correct position, place the horizontal strap of the hinge against it, and mark your drilling positions. Ensure everything is level. Given the weight of the door, use sufficiently strong screws. Screws are not included.
How to Care for the Product
For smooth and quiet operation, you can occasionally lubricate the hinge pin with a drop of oil. To clean the surface, use only a dry cloth.
What to Note
This solid hinge is not suitable for light interior doors made of hollow materials. Always ensure that the material of the door and frame is strong enough to support the weight of the hinge and the door leaf.
