The bracket is assembled from flat steel straps. A vertical arm fits against the wall, whilst the horizontal supporting arm sits beneath the shelf board. The two sections are connected by a diagonal reinforcing brace. Its centre is torsioned, meaning that the bar is decoratively twisted around its longitudinal axis. This detail recalls traditional blacksmithing techniques whilst drawing attention to the triangular reinforcement of the structure.

The outer ends of both the horizontal and vertical arms are rolled into simple curls. Minor surface irregularities and slight variations in shape reinforce the rustic appearance. This is not a cast iron component, but a hand-worked structural steel bracket with a black protective finish.

The design reflects a rustic Historicist style inspired by medieval blacksmithing and the Arts and Crafts movement. It is not an exact reproduction of a particular medieval shelf support. The Arts and Crafts movement developed particularly during the second half of the 19th century as a reaction against anonymous industrial mass production. How to Install the Shelf Bracket

Install the bracket with its vertical arm resting fully against the wall and its horizontal arm supporting the shelf board from below. Before drilling, check that no electrical cables, water pipes or other services pass behind the intended mounting position.

• Mark the desired shelf height with a spirit level.
• Hold the first bracket against the wall and mark the centres of its mounting holes.
• Position the second bracket at the same height and at a suitable distance from the first.
• Use screws and wall plugs appropriate to the masonry and expected load.
• When mounting to solid timber, drill narrow pilot holes first.
• Tighten the fixings evenly without applying excessive force.
• Place the shelf board on the horizontal arms and secure it with suitable short screws.
• Check that the screws cannot penetrate the upper surface of the board.

The shelf board should not be substantially deeper than the brackets can safely support. Mounting hardware is not supplied because the correct type and length must be selected according to the wall construction, shelf thickness and planned load.

Load Capacity and Safe Use

No tested maximum load is specified. Actual capacity depends primarily upon the number and spacing of the brackets, the strength of the shelf board, the quality of the fixings and the condition of the wall. Add weight gradually after installation and watch for movement in the brackets, shelf or anchors.

• Do not use the bracket as a handle, step, seat or climbing aid.
• Do not overload a long shelf supported only at its outer ends.
• Do not place unstable objects on the shelf where a fall could cause injury.
• Do not attempt to bend or reshape the steel structure with a hammer.
• Do not drill additional holes through the diagonal brace or its joints.
• Inspect the screws and wall surface regularly.

Care of the Steel Bracket

• Remove dust with a dry or slightly damp soft cloth.
• Dry the surface thoroughly after contact with water.
• Treat damage to the black finish promptly with protective paint or maintenance oil.
• Do not use aggressive chemicals, abrasive pads or wire wool.
• When installed in a damp environment, inspect the surface regularly for corrosion.

Minor irregularities, traces of manual working and slight differences between individual pieces are not defects. They are characteristic features of a historic-style metal fitting.

We recommend a solid oak, ash or pine shelf board, high-quality wall plugs and screws suitable for the substrate, and short wood screws for securing the shelf.
