A Rustic Door Hinge Inspired by Medieval Ironwork

This fitting is not an exact reproduction of one particular archaeological find. Its design is inspired by medieval and early modern strap hinges used approximately between the 13th and 17th centuries. The long metal arm distributed the load across a broad area of a timber door, shutter or chest lid. It could also help bind separate wooden boards together and strengthen the moving panel.

Historic door hinges were frequently finished with leaf-shaped terminals, arrow points, shields or curling ornaments. These details transformed an ordinary structural fitting into a visible decorative feature. The pair of open scrolls beside the knuckle gives this model a bold silhouette suited to medieval, Gothic, rustic, farmhouse and historic revival interiors.

Construction and Appearance

The hinge is cast from iron and consists of a long strap, a decoratively widened section beside the knuckle and a short rectangular mounting leaf. Attach the long strap to the moving door, gate, shutter or chest lid. The shorter rectangular leaf is fitted to the stationary frame, post or body of the chest.

The black surface has an intentionally uneven rustic texture. A rounded, leaf-shaped plate forms the end of the strap, while two large open scrolls decorate the hinged section. Each piece is individually cast, so slight differences in surface texture, colour and minor production marks may occur. These variations are natural characteristics of the material and enhance the antique appearance rather than constituting defects.

How to Install the Strap Hinge

First establish the opening direction and make sure that both the door and its frame are structurally sound. Place the long strap on the outside of the moving panel. Position the short rectangular leaf on the fixed frame, with the hinge pin running parallel to and immediately beside the edge of the door.

Initially fit one screw on either side of the hinge and test the movement of the door. Once the alignment is correct, mark the remaining holes. When fixing the hinge to timber, drill pilot holes using a bit slightly narrower than the core of the screw. This reduces the risk of splitting the wood and helps the screws enter straight.

Use the supplied plastic wall plugs only in suitable masonry. They are not required for timber. The included fixings may not be appropriate for every substrate or load, so replace them when necessary with wood screws, bolts or anchors selected for the thickness and construction of the door and frame.

Install at least two hinges on a door or gate. Three or more should be used on tall, wide or relatively heavy panels. No specific load rating is provided, so this hinge should not be used as the sole support for exceptionally heavy gates, security doors or other safety-critical installations.

Care, Maintenance and Safety

• Wipe the surface regularly with a dry or slightly damp cloth, then dry it thoroughly.
• Lubricate the knuckle occasionally with a small quantity of machine oil or suitable grease.
• Apply a thin layer of protective oil or metal wax to help prevent corrosion.
• Inspect the surface more frequently when the hinge is used outdoors, particularly after rain and during winter.
• Do not use aggressive cleaning products, strong acids or coarse abrasive tools.
• Cast iron is strong but less flexible than structural steel. Do not bend the hinge or attempt to straighten it with a hammer.
• Wear work gloves during installation and keep your fingers clear of the moving knuckle.
• Before hanging the door, check the frame, timber, screws and every fixing point for secure attachment.
• Do not use the hinge as security hardware, a lifting point or a support for people or suspended loads.

We recommend combining this hinge with black decorative screws, a rustic door pull, sliding bolt, hasp, ring knocker or ornamental corner straps. For a coherent 13th- to 17th-century-inspired appearance, select black hardware with an uneven finish and simple leaf or scroll motifs. Use two or three matching strap hinges on wider doors to distribute the load and create a balanced decorative arrangement.
