Bronze Cloak Clasp "Midgard Serpent" – Urnes Style
Late Viking Art at Your Service
This two-part clasp operates on a hook-and-eye principle, a historically proven and very practical method for fastening heavier garments such as woollen cloaks, caftans, or tunics. Unlike common brooches (fibulae), it does not damage the fabric by piercing it.
How to attach: The clasp is designed to be sewn onto the garment. Note the small openings incorporated into the knotwork design and the loops at the edges. Use strong linen or waxed thread to sew each part of the clasp to one side of the cloak's hem through these points. Ensure the stitching is secure, especially if the clasp will be holding heavy wool.
The design clearly references the Urnes style (approx. 1050–1125 AD), named after the stave church in Urnes, Norway. This style is typical for its looping, S-curved animal bodies fighting or intertwining. In this case, the motif resembles the mythical Midgard Serpent biting its own tail, or a battle of dragons, symbolizing the eternal cycle and dynamism of the Viking world.

Caring for Your Bronze Jewellery
Bronze is a living material that develops a natural patina over time. For historical replicas, this is often a desirable effect that adds authenticity. However, if you prefer a high shine:
- You can polish the clasp using a soft cloth and special metal polishing paste.
- For eco-friendly cleaning, a solution of lemon juice and baking soda works well; rinse with water and dry thoroughly afterwards.
- Warning: Never machine wash a garment with this metal clasp attached. There is a risk of damaging the washing machine drum, tearing off the clasp, or ripping the fabric due to the weight of the metal during spinning. We recommend removing the clasp before washing or washing the garment gently by hand.
This piece is ideal for the 11th to 12th century period, but in the realms of Fantasy and LARP, it serves perfectly for any character with a Nordic or barbarian background.
