The History of the Heater Shield
Heater-style shields became popular in the High Middle Ages, from the 13th century onwards, replacing the earlier, longer, and more cumbersome kite shields. Their more compact shape was more practical for combat on horseback and on foot while still offering ample protection. Most importantly, their flat top and symmetrical shape created the perfect surface for displaying heraldry. In the chaos of a medieval battle, the coat of arms on a shield was essentially a knight's identification card, allowing friend and foe to instantly recognize who they were facing.

Care and Customization
For painting your custom design, we recommend using high-quality acrylic paints. After the paint has dried, it is advisable to seal the entire shield with a clear coat varnish (either glossy or matte) to protect your artwork from scratches and the elements. Keep the steel shield dry to prevent corrosion, especially if the paintwork gets damaged. It's a good practice to treat the leather straps with a leather conditioner from time to time to keep them supple and prevent cracking.
A Note on the Finish
The shield is supplied with a basic black primer coat. This finish may have minor irregularities, scratches, or other small cosmetic blemishes in some places. As this is a semi-finished product intended for further creative work and to be painted over, these imperfections are not considered a reason for complaint.
