Steel Knee Cops (Poleyns) with Side Rondels, 14th-15th Century

Protect your knees! In any sword fight, whether it's HEMA, SCA, or re-enactment, the knees are one of the most vulnerable areas. These steel knee cops (poleyns) are designed just for you. They are crafted from robust 1.6mm (16 gauge) steel and feature a practical polished finish. Their design is based on historical examples from the 14th and 15th centuries. The key feature is the large side rondels (fans), which provide crucial protection to the inside and outside of the knee against cunning strikes and thrusts. Thanks to the leather straps with buckles, you can fasten them easily and securely. Stop risking injury and equip yourself with reliable protection that lets you focus solely on the fight. Steel Knee Cops (Poleyns) with Side Rondels, 14th-15th Century

This pair of knee cops (poleyns) is crafted from 1.63 mm (16 gauge) mild steel. Each cop consists of an anatomically shaped bowl that cups and protects the knee, and a distinct side rondel (fan). This rondel, typical of Gothic armour, is riveted to the outer side to protect the vulnerable joint from lateral attacks.

On the inside, the steel is blackened for rust protection. The poleyns are secured to the leg using two sturdy cowhide leather straps, which are equipped with steel buckles for easy adjustment and a tight fit. We recommend wearing them over padded leg protection (e.g., quilted chausses or gambeson components) to prevent chafing and to increase comfort and shock absorption.

Historical Context

Poleyns (knee cops) first appeared as separate knee protection in the late 13th and early 14th centuries, often strapped to maille or quilted chausses. During the 14th century, they evolved rapidly and became an integral part of plate leg harness. The addition of the side rondel or "fan" was a key innovation, significantly improving the protection of the knee joint from side-on blows, which were very common in combat. This style was particularly popular during the late 14th and first half of the 15th century.

Care and Warning

This product is ideal for historical fencing (HEMA), SCA, LARP, and re-enactment. As it is made of polished steel, it is susceptible to rust.

  • Thoroughly dry the armour after each use.
  • Regularly treat it with a conservation oil (e.g., WD-40, mineral oil, or beeswax) to prevent corrosion.
  • Store it in a dry environment.
  • Treat the leather straps with leather care products to keep them supple and prevent cracking.

Warning: This is not certified protective armour designed for full-contact combat such as buhurt (HMB, Battle of the Nations). Use is at your own risk.
