Medieval Wool Kirtle Dress with Front Lacing – Wine Red
Authentic Construction and Details
This dress is designed to serve as a versatile base layer or a standalone gown. The front lace-up closure is not only practical for self-dressing but also historically correct for the period. A key feature of this garment is the hand-stitched eyelets, a detail often overlooked in modern reproductions. The lacing area and neckline are reinforced with a linen facing to prevent stretching and ensure longevity.
The half sleeves are practical for camp life, keeping your cuffs clean during chores, while allowing you to show off your linen chemise or attach fashionable pin-on sleeves for a more formal look. The dress is finished with a sturdy black cord tipped with metal aiglets for easy lacing.
The Benefits of Wool
Wool was the fabric of choice in the Middle Ages for good reason. It is naturally breathable, moisture-wicking, and insulates even when damp. Importantly for reenactors, wool is naturally flame-resistant, making it much safer to wear around campfires than synthetic alternatives or cotton.
Whether you are portraying a merchant's wife, a craftswoman, or a lady of the manor, this kirtle adapts to your needs. Wear it over a chemise for a simple look, or under a gown (houppelande) for a layered, noble appearance.
Care Instructions
To preserve the natural qualities of the wool and the shape of the dress:
- Hand wash cold or dry clean only.
- Do not bleach and do not tumble dry.
- Wool is self-cleaning; airing it out is often sufficient to refresh the garment.
- Iron on a low/warm setting if needed.
Please Note: This listing is for the wine red wool dress only. The long-sleeved cream underdress (chemise) shown in the photos is worn underneath and is not included. Accessories are sold separately.
