Essential Gear Under Every Helmet
Inspired by the fashion and armour technology of the 13th to 15th centuries, this padded cap is designed to fit snugly against the head. Thanks to its light quilting, it acts as a shock absorber. If you have ever taken a blow to an unpadded helmet, you know how unpleasant the ringing in your ears can be. The cap dampens vibrations and protects your skull from abrasions caused by metal or mail.
The three-panel construction ensures the cap follows the shape of your head without creating uncomfortable folds that could press painfully under a tight helmet. It is made from high-quality linen with a weight of 220 gsm. Why linen? In the Middle Ages, it was the number one material for undergarments and arming wear. It is strong, breathable, and absorbs sweat perfectly. It keeps you relatively cool in summer and warm in winter.
Historical Insight: Hygiene First
In the Middle Ages, the padded coif served not only a protective function but primarily a hygienic one. Helmets could not be easily washed and were often rusty inside or full of grease and dust. A linen cap (often called an arming cap or calotte) could be easily boiled to remove dirt and parasites. It was a barrier between the dirty battlefield and your skin. Knights and foot soldiers alike knew that keeping their heads clean was vital.

Care Instructions

- Washing: I recommend hand washing or a gentle machine cycle in cold water with mild detergent. Linen has a tendency to shrink in hot water.
- Drying: Never tumble dry the cap. Lay it flat or hang it up to air dry. This preserves the structure of the padding.
- Storage: After every training session or battle, air out the cap thoroughly and let the sweat dry. Do not store it damp in a closed bag, as the linen could mildew.
