Renaissance Landsknecht Beret "Franz" – Recycled Wool

A Symbol of Freedom and Style

This type of headwear, often simply called a "beret" or "cap," was immensely popular across Europe during the Renaissance. It was worn not only by wealthy burghers and craftsmen but was famously adopted by the Landsknechts—German mercenaries known for their flamboyant, slashed clothing and disregard for conventional dress codes. The beret was worn in many ways: pulled deep over the forehead, tilted jauntily to the side, or pushed back.

The "Franz" model is crafted from thick wool felt with a density of 350 GSM. This material ensures the beret holds its voluminous shape well, remains breathable, and provides excellent warmth in cold weather. Over time, the wool will gently mold to the shape of your head, ensuring a personalised fit.

When and How to Wear It

This beret is an ideal choice for re-enactment of the Late Gothic and Renaissance periods (approx. 1480–1550). It perfectly complements the costume of a crossbowman, arquebusier, pikeman, or a civilian merchant. Due to its spacious cut (often referred to as a "pie" shape), you can arrange the volume of the cap on your head exactly to suit your mood or historical engravings.

Note: Other clothing items shown in the photos (such as the linen shirt or skirt) are not included in the delivery but serve as inspiration for your historical ensemble.

Care Instructions for Wool

To keep your beret looking like new and serving you well for years, please follow these care guidelines:

  • Cleaning: Brush off dust and lint with a soft garment brush.
  • Washing: If necessary, hand wash only in cold water using a detergent specifically designed for wool (containing lanolin).
  • Drying: Never wring or twist the fabric. Gently squeeze out excess water into a towel. Dry flat on a horizontal surface, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.

What to Avoid

As this is a product made from natural materials, please handle with care:

  • Do not machine wash or tumble dry—this will cause the wool to shrink and felt irreversibly.
  • Do not use harsh chemical cleaners or bleach.
  • When storing for long periods, protect against moths (e.g., using lavender sachets or cedar wood).
