St. Birgitta’s Linen Cap – Authentic 13th Century Headwear

Authentic Construction and Versatility

This close-fitting coif is constructed with a distinctive central seam running over the crown of the head. The back of the cap features intricate knife pleats at the nape of the neck, creating a pouch-like shape that comfortably accommodates pinned-up hair or braids. The long strap ties are designed to be wrapped around the head or tied securely under the chin, ensuring the cap stays in place all day.

Historically, this cap served multiple purposes:

  • Hygiene: It kept hair clean from soot and dust.
  • Base Layer: It provided a non-slip foundation for pinning veils, wimples, and circlets.
  • Modesty: It fulfilled the social requirement for women to cover their hair.

Fabric and Care

Crafted from natural fibres for breathability and comfort, this cap is available in either 100% Linen (lightweight 150 gsm, perfect for warm weather) or a sturdy Cotton-Linen blend (240 gsm). The natural fabric wicks moisture away and softens with use.

To maintain the cap's quality:

  • Machine wash at 40°C (104°F) on a gentle cycle.
  • Do not bleach or tumble dry.
  • Air dry and iron on a warm setting, preferably while the fabric is slightly damp.

Please Note: This listing is for the cap only. The dress and apron shown in the photos are not included. Slight variations in the weave or texture are natural characteristics of linen and add to the historical authenticity.
