Viking Birka Cap from Recycled Wool, Brown

Detailed Product Description

This Viking cap features a simple yet perfectly functional design, typical for the Norse people. It has a rich brown colour and is constructed from six carefully stitched panels. This design ensures the cap fits snugly on the head, stays in place, and holds its shape even during strenuous activities. It is made from a sturdy wool fabric with a weight of 350 gsm. The entire cap is machine-stitched for maximum durability, with the only visible external stitching located on the double-folded hem, enhancing its clean and period-appropriate look.

Experience History First-Hand

Whether you're heading to a grand Viking festival, a medieval market, a thrilling LARP battle, or a gathering of the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism), the Birka cap is the right choice for you. It will reliably keep you warm during chilly evenings around the campfire while perfectly accentuating the authenticity of your garb. Thanks to its universal design, it's suitable not only for a Viking character but also for other early medieval portrayals.

Born in the Heart of the Viking World

The pattern for this cap is based on a specific find from grave Bj 581 in Birka, which dates to the 10th century. Similar simple, close-fitting caps were an essential part of daily life for Vikings facing the harsh Nordic climate. They provided protection from the cold, wind, and rain. While the original from the grave belonged to a high-status individual and was a symbol of their standing, our reproduction is designed with a focus on functionality, warmth, and accessibility for every history enthusiast.

A Glimpse into History: Birka, the Jewel of the Vikings

Birka, located on the island of Björkö in Lake Mälaren, Sweden, was no ordinary settlement. Between 750–975 AD, it was one of the most important trading and craft centres in all of Northern Europe. Archaeological finds from Birka, including remnants of textiles, give us an invaluable insight into the life, fashion, and extensive trade networks of the Norse people. For them, wearing headwear was not just practical; it often reflected the wearer's social status.

Warm and Durable Recycled Wool

The cap is made from 100% recycled wool with a fabric weight of 350 gsm. We chose this material not only for its historical accuracy but also for its excellent properties:

  • Excellent Insulation: Wool fibres naturally trap air, which will reliably keep you warm.
  • Breathability: It prevents overheating and wicks moisture away from your head.
  • Warm Even When Wet: Wool can absorb up to 30% of its own weight in water before feeling wet, and it retains its insulating properties even then.
  • Durability: It is a resilient and strong material that will serve you for a long time.
  • Safety: Wool is naturally flame-retardant, a significant advantage when sitting by an open fire.

How to Care for Your Cap

To ensure your Viking cap lasts a long time and retains its beauty, please follow these instructions:

  • Washing: Hand wash exclusively in cold water (up to 30°C / 86°F) using a mild detergent for wool.
  • Drying: Do not tumble dry! Lay the cap flat, for example on a clean towel, and let it air dry at room temperature. Avoid direct sunlight and heat sources.
  • Ironing: Usually not necessary. If needed, iron on the lowest setting (wool program), ideally through a damp cloth.
