The Cornerstone Garment of Ages Past
For over a thousand years, the simple, straight-cut tunic was the absolute foundation of men's clothing in Europe. It was essentially the "uniform" of the Middle Ages, worn by everyone from simple peasants to kings. Its genius lay in its versatility—in summer, it was worn alone as a light and airy garment; in winter, it served as an underlayer beneath warmer woollen tunics or cloaks. For warriors, a breathable cotton or linen tunic was an indispensable layer under a gambeson and maille armour, where it wicked away sweat and prevented chafing.
